Riders, dealers and ISP turn out for motorcycle summit
“What can we do right now as a team to push down the number of motorcycle fatalities?” was the question of the day at the Rend Lake Project Office and Visitor Center.
Members of the Illinois State Police District 13 headquarters converged on the facility for a motorcycle summit that included motorcycle dealers and riders of a number of groups Thursday morning to discuss ways to combat the growing number of deaths that result from motorcycle crashes.
Trooper David Sneed, a member of the Safety Education Unit, welcomed riders and dealers as he read statistics pertaining to the number of motorcycle fatalities. He said four occurred in 2010 with that number increasing to 14 last year with the majority of crashes occurring on U.S. and state highways.
“Twenty-six percent of those occurred in clear weather and 71 percent occurred from May to September,” Sneed said. “Twenty-six percent of motorcycle riders ride without the proper certification, training. We have asked dealers to meet with us as a commitment to see that number driven to zero in 2012.”
