When it comes to a skiing vacation, getting there is far less than half the fun. Busier airports, tighter connections, and increased baggage fees and restrictions have made travel to ski country a challenge at best. Add in the wild card of winter weather and your best-laid plans can easily turn disastrous. As a veteran ski and snowsports journalist, I’ve learned a few simple travel tactics to help you save money, avoid hassles, and get to the slopes faster and in a better mood.
Time Your Trip from Door to Door: A quick, easy travel day can, at the minimum let you lounge in a hot tub when you might otherwise be sitting in an airport. At best, it can even get you an extra day on the slopes. When you’re making your airline reservations, remember that the bottom line is what time you’re going to actually arrive at the resort. A direct flight from New York to Denver is a little over three hours. But if you’re heading on to Aspen, you’ve got a 200-mile drive ahead of you, which can take up to four hours even in good weather. The flight from New York to Salt Lake City is longer—four and a half hours—but once you arrive it’s only 35 miles to Deer Valley. Catch an early morning flight, and you might even hit the resort in time to take a few turns.

After all, it's under two days since I first left her in the care of ski school to get to grips with putting on ski boots and figuring out how to stand with planks of fibreglass firmly attached to her feet. Just 48 hours later, I see her hurtling down |
