Decker's Outdoor: Don't Give This Stock the Boot
With the market struggling to find its footing amid worries over European debt default and American debt super committees, investors are shunning stocks to avoid being caught flat-footed. But, Deckers Outdoor ( DECK ), the maker of UGG and Teva footwear, is too good a stock to relegate to the back of the closet.
The second quarter is typically the weakest volume quarter at Decker's. Yet, the company's expanded UGG and Teva product line and the addition of 11 new branded stores in the past year helped revenue climb 13%, which was $11 million above plan. Not bad growth during the weakest sales volume period of the year.
And, the company is guiding toward a very strong fall and winter season, predicting 90% of its full year profits will be generated in Q3 and Q4 thanks to 28% revenue growth and 32% earnings growth in the back half of the year.
What's driving success? The company is expanding its UGG brand to include sandals, clogs, sneakers, men's footwear and accessories. It's expanded its TEVA brand to include more closed toe footwear to capture sales outside the sandal sales season. It's taken its European distribution in house to ex-out the middlemen. And, it's taken a well thought out plan to launching 30 of its own branded stores, with plans to add 14 more by year end and a goal of opening 25 stores a year for the foreseeable future.
