Muscle Walk to benefit families affected by diseases
Hundreds of Lubbockites will lace up their walking shoes and walk for a cause Saturday morning.
The annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Muscle Walk will be at 8 a.m. in the South Plains Mall, 6002 Slide Road. The walk helps the association raise money to serve area residents with muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease — and other muscle diseases.
Ashley Knox, executive director of the association, said although this is the second year for the recently renamed Muscle Walk, the MDA walk has been going on in Lubbock for about nine years. This year’s event is a half-mile walk inside the mall.
“It’s a low-mileage walk,” she said. “We call it a victory lap; it’s MDA’s victory lap. We’ve invited client families to fight back against muscular dystrophy, and we’ve also reached out to the community and existing sponsors.”
MDA is a nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.
