CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When cyclists say "Let's rock and roll," they usually don't mean it literally. Most of the time, they're simply pumping up their nerves for competition.

But rocking and rolling are exactly what a new bike trainer from Kurt Kinetic permits. What's more, the rocking isn't just a gimmick. If anything, it'll make you a stronger, more well-balanced cyclist.

In contrast to standard bike trainers, which hold your bike in a fixed position so stable you could fall asleep on it, the "Rock and Roll" demands constant alertness by allowing the front wheel to swivel and the whole frame to tilt side to side on rubber cushions, simulating curves.

There's a lot of play in the system. For me, simply mounting my bike the first time was a bit of a struggle. In the hallway where I set up the trainer, I caught myself pushing against the walls for balance while I clipped my cycling shoes into the pedals.
