Parenting Points - Getting young children to co-operate big challenge
One of the biggest challenges in parenting young children is getting them to co-operate. However, often we confuse the word co-operate with obey.
Co-operation means working together, and this is a lifelong skill that all children need to learn. Co-operation does not mean getting children to do everything you ask them to do.
Babies start to learn about co-operation when parents respond to their needs. They understand that help is there when they need it.
There are many ways for parents to show babies about co-operation. Passing a toy back and forth or sharing a snack are simple ways of co-operating.
As babies grow into toddlers, they begin to see that they can have some control over their actions, and understand some of the results of those actions. They are starting to be aware of the limits parents set in regard to safety and acceptable behaviours. However, they do not yet have the self-control to be co-operative without guidance.
In fact, toddlers often appear to be very unco-operative. They love to test the limits. They may run away from parents, refuse to follow directions, or do the opposite of what has been asked of them.
